Every device connected to the net receives its own IP address That is a separate number that stays with your computer or phone whenever you are online. Imagine it as your home address in the digital world, but it follows everything you do here. IP stands for Internet Protocol, and the word “address” exactly describes it, it works as a return label on a letter.
They do two important tasks: identify computers in the net and help find their position. Thanks to the unique IP, your data certainly arrives at the intended place. The information travels in packets along ways that are like highways with intersetions (that is the routers).
What Is an IP Address
Because IP is a protocol without connection, based on datagrams, every packet must carry the address of the sender, recipient and other details in its header to know where it goes.
There are two main kinds: IPv4 and IPv6. IPv4, which means Internet Protocol version 4, has a form of four numbers separated by dots, for instance 192.168.35.4. Every part (called octet) is made up of 8 bits of 0s and 1s. This gives you 256 possible values from 00000000 to 11111111, so the maximum is 255 for each.
But here is the problem: almost no free IPv4 addresses stay to give. IPv6 on the other hand uses eight groups of four hexadecimal figures, separated by colons, as 2620:cc:8000:1c82:544c:cc2e:f2fa:5a9b. Support for it is not yet normal, and they are a bit difficult to remember.
So that an IP address can work, you split it into two parts. The first is the network address, the second. The host.
For instance in 192.168.123.132 the network part is 192.168.123, and.132 shows the host.
When a device connects directly to the internet, it receives a public IP, that is unique through the hole world. Your ISP assigns it to your computer or router when you connect. Many addresses come temporary by means of DHCP, while servers commonly have fixed settings.
Even so IP identifies only a network interface at the protocol level, no person or particular machine. Addresses you commonly change, share by means of NAT or even fake easily.
Network Address Translation. NAT, happens in your router. It takes the local LAN addresses and assigns them to the outer WAN address of the ISP.
Every website that you visit sees only the public IP, because servers need to know where to send packets with your data. Place or type of device does not change the IP address. When something enters the local net, it asks for the address of the nearest router.
Summarizing IP addresses in a network means combining many ways into one main route. That method helps to keep the routing tables simple and fast instead of watching many separateways.
